Surfshark Review (updated Aug. 2019)
With so many VPN options to choose from nowadays, it’s difficult to weed out the reliable ones from the mediocre. Fortunately, there are VPN services that actually perform the way they’re advertising themselves. Surfshark is a cheap VPN that is new to the market but is already promising in terms of performance. Some of its features include high-speed servers, unlimited simultaneous connections, bypassing geo-restriction, and of course, the no-log policy. But what makes it special from all the other VPNs? In this Surfshark review, we’ll see if it truly works or not.
Surfshark VPN: Is it the best new VPN newcomer?
When getting a VPN, I always tell my readers to only subscribe to reputable names. One factor which tells you that a VPN is reliable is if it’s been around for a long time. However, that doesn’t mean that new VPN services shouldn’t be trusted, because we never know, the newcomer today might just become the best VPN service in the next years after this Surfshark review.
Based in the British Virgin Islands, Surfshark started its services around 2018. Another tip when picking out a VPN: find out where the headquarters is located at. Fortunately, this VPN’s territory doesn’t implement data retention law so they can offer a no-logs policy. This way, you’ll stay completely anonymous online.
Based on their website, you can’t see a lot of information about them. There isn’t even an About page or a page for their team. What we do know is that the company is part of the RIPE Network Coordination Centre and their CTO is Magnus Steinberg. We’ll have to see if they are truly reliable in the long run, but for now, we’ll evaluate their performance.
As of now, they have more than 500 servers which is still growing as we speak. You can choose servers in various locations such as Europe, Africa, the Americas, and the Asia Pacific. Despite having a large number of servers, some of the most popular locations include the USA, UK, and Canada.
Connecting to this virtual private network is easy-peasy. All you have to do go to their official website and sign up for an account. Once you’ve signed up, download the free software for Windows, Mac, or Linux using browsers like Firefox or Chrome. If you’re using a smartphone or tablet, download the app for iOS and Android. Just sign in using your credentials and you’re good to go! Here’s a tip: configure the protocol to OpenVPN, the strongest and best protocol.
VPN Surfshark Plans and Pricing
Unlike most VPN plans, you can get all of the Surfshark VPN features no matter what plan you get. There are 3 different plans so no matter how long you wish to subscribe, you’ll still get the same features. That’s one thing that I like about it. However, if you choose the one month only plan, you’ll have to pay $11.95 per month, which is quite pricey. If you want to save on your monthly bill, you can subscribe for 2 years and get 71% discount. That’s just $3.49 per month, which is a huge difference.
The best feature that sets it apart from other VPN services is the unlimited number of simultaneous connections that it allows. Most VPNs only allow up to 6 connections at most, but with Surfshark VPN, you can connect almost any device. This way, you can share your protection with family members at home with just one account. How cool is that?
The downside is that they don’t offer a free trial. However, you can subscribe risk-free for up to 30 days. If you really want to try it out before committing, then please do so. You can cancel any time if it’s not what you truly want anyway. Use the link in this Surfshark review so you can score the best deal you’ll ever find.
Payment methods accepted include credit card, PayPal, and cryptocurrencies. You’ll stay safe and anonymous even when paying.

How to use VPN Surfshark
Setting up the software
Although a VPN sounds so complicated, setting it up is surprisingly easy to do. I’m not saying this because I have a lot of experience in installing VPNs (but I actually do). Surfshark VPN is easy to install because there are only two buttons that you have to click throughout the entire process. Simply click Install and Run, then you’re good to go.
Streaming movies and videos
Did you know that the Netflix library in your country greatly differs from that of the others? The US library has way better movies and TV shows than other countries, and that seems unfair. After all, you’re paying for the same subscription. If you want to turn this situation around, use a VPN and choose a server from the country of your choice. You’ll be able to access their library like a true local.
You can also unblock BBC iPlayer if it’s not available in your region. By connecting to a server in the UK, you’ll be able to bypass geo-restrictions and stream movies and videos in peace.
This VPN does not keep logs of your data. Since it’s based in the British Virgin Islands, it’s not included in laws that oblige companies to retain user data. If you’re planning to download torrents, you can do it safely with a VPN. Your real IP address will be hidden so no one can trace you.
VPN Surfshark Features
VPNs are fail-safe, which explains the kill switch feature. It means that in case your internet connection is suddenly gone, it will force all apps to close and won’t allow you to access it until it comes back. So even if you’re downloading and the internet suddenly gets disconnected, your IP address won’t be revealed.
Another feature that I like the most. Other VPN services offered this feature too, but it’s called plenty of names. You might know it as it’s commonly known: ad blocker, tracker blocker, malware blocking. This is great because you won’t have to download and add extensions to your browser.
Worried that you might raise suspicions? This VPN also offers the trademarked feature called Whitelister, or commonly known as split tunneling. Basically, it allows you to use apps or web pages with or without a VPN. For example, you can configure Gmail to be used with a VPN, but choose Skype not to.
Split-tunneling is useful because it will allow you to access geo-restricted content while still being able to access those that you need with your original IP address. You just have to be extra careful with the websites or apps you’re whitelisting and use a secure connection at all times.
Wi-Fi networks that aren’t yours can be dangerous. Public Wi-Fis are even worse. This feature will protect you from both secured and unsecured networks. You never know if a router is reliable even if you know the owner, so you have to avoid being subject to man-in-the-middle attacks.
Commonly known as double VPN, this feature allows you to connect to two VPN servers at the same time. It distributed your data between the two servers for added protection. Although it might be slower compared to regular VPN servers, it’s worth the delay so perhaps you can turn on this feature only when really necessary.
Another feature that makes your traffic almost nonexistent, the NoBorders mode allows you to obfuscate your VPN traffic. It’s perfect for countries where the VPN is banned, such as China. This way, you’ll get unrestricted internet access despite the censorship. However, you’ll also experience a slower internet connection with this one.
Windows Client Features
Simple user interface
The VPN Surfshark has clean, sophisticated user interface that is easy to use and aesthetically pleasing. Connecting to a server only requires one click of a button. Most VPN services I have used don’t have as beautiful interfaces as this despite being old, reputable names. You’ll see a list of the countries where you can connect to the servers but it doesn’t display any other information. If you want to use Multi-Hop, you can click the option on the upper-right hand of the server list.
The cogwheel icon will redirect you to the Settings page. It basically contains the necessary items to configure security, connectivity, and advanced settings. You can explore the settings and choose to turn on or off some certain features. This is where you’ll also be able to choose what protocol you wish to use. I suggest you use OpenVPN or IKEv2.
If you own devices in other platforms, worry not. The Surfshark VPN app is availabe for Mac, Android, and iOS. And best of all, it allows unlimited connections so you can even use it on your smart TV or router.
This is a huge factor when choosing a VPN. Not all VPN services are created equal and even the best ones encounter problems sometimes. You need a VPN with fast customer support to answer your queries. VPN Surfshark has email and 24/7 live chat available. You can also check out their website for helpful articles.
So this ends my Surfshark review. I absolutely liked this VPN service despite it being brand new to the market. In terms of pricing, it’s steeper than some VPNs but considering the fact that it’s loaded with features no matter what plan you get, I’d say it’s worth the money. And anyway, it’s a cheap VPN if you subscribe for 2 years.
If you’re not tech-savy, this VPN will work perfectly for you. The simple and straightforward interface will suit anyone whatever their technical know-how is.
